A dashboard is a graphical monitoring and reporting tool that can help nonprofit organizations cultivate a culture of data-driven decision making. In "Models and Components of a Great Nonprofit Dashboard", capacity building experts Hilda H. Polanco and Sarah Walker share insights on how to set up and effectively use a dashboard system. While dashboards are relevant to programs and services, this article particularly focuses on their role in the context of organizational financial health.
Creating a dashboard requires a team of key people to discuss what success means for the organization, clarify the organization's Business-Model Drivers, identify strengths and challenge areas, and ultimately hone in on measurable key performance indicators (KPIs). The article covers each step of this process and provides several case studies of successfully-implemented dashboards. Through these examples, the reader will become more familiar with how a dashboard operates in practice.
