There is no obligation for charitable organizations to get demographic information from donors.
Donors may want to remain anonymous if they so choose. Guidelines have been released by Apra, an association of fundraisers, the "Apra Ethics and Compliance Committee Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Data Guide".
As a general rule, charitable organizations should keep their expectations low when it comes to demographic statistics. Nonprofits need to be aware of the types of data that cannot be lawfully obtained in order to better understand their donors' beliefs.
Fines and litigation in class-action lawsuits may ensue from data breaches, which might lead to financial harm.
