2023 Rolex Awards for Enterprise: Five Laureates Announced

Constantino Aucca Chutas is a Peruvian scientist who's created 16 protected areas in that country and around the world.

He's also one of five recipients of the 2023 Rolex Awards for Enterprise, awarded by the Swiss watch-maker to people who have made "a significant contribution to the environment, humans, and animals," Rolex says in a press release.

The other recipients are: Denica Riadini-Flesch of Indonesia, who's worked with rural craftswomen to develop business skills and environmental stewardship education; Liu Shaochuang of China, who's tracking wild camels in the Gobi Desert via satellite; Beth Koigi of Kenya, who's creating solar-powered generators that will provide clean water to 3,000 people in 10 communities; and Inza Kone of Ivory Coast, who's protecting a biodiverse forest.

The awards were established in 1976 to mark the 50th anniversary of the first waterproof watch, the Rolex Oyster, Rolex notes.

Since then, 160 laureates have won the awards, which are decided by a jury of 10 doctors.
