Newsweek's ranking of the world's best hospitals is out, and one hospital in particular is getting a lot of attention: Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto, Calif.
The magazine notes that health care is by far the biggest source of greenhouse gases in the world, and the US is by far the biggest source, contributing a little more than a quarter of global health-sector emissions.
"If you're consuming or burning fossil fuels, I think it's pretty scientifically proven at this point you're impacting the health of people," says Keith Edgerton of the nonprofit group Health Care Without Harm, which works with thousands of hospitals, health systems, and clinics around the world to find ways to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
Stanford Health Care, for instance, cut its emissions by almost 35% between 2012 and 2022, and it's one of several hospitals on Newsweek's list that are taking the lead on doing so.
Other hospitals on the list include the University of Michigan Health in Ann Arbor and California's UCI Health, which is constructing a 144-bed hospital that it says will be the nation's first all-electric medical center when it opens in 2025.
