"We have a treatment industry that, unfortunately, is built today on the lack of success of patients," says Amanda Wilson, an addiction physician and founder of NorthStar Care.
"And unfortunately that treatment's lack of success is blamed on the patient, on their motivation on their diligence, and not actually on the treatment itself, which, unfortunately, is not effective."
Wilson was one of a panel of experts who discussed mental health in the workplace at the Midwest Business Group on Health's "Strategies for the Workplace: Mental Health Expert Panel," which the group says "underscored the urgency of addressing mental health challenges in corporate settings and exploring alternative treatment modalities."
Speakers included Marcus Capone, a former Navy SEAL and founder of TARA Mind, a nonprofit aiming to expand access to affordable mental health treatment; Meg Delp, director of workplace mental health at the National Alliance on Mental Illness; andarolyn Carlton, a pharmacist and medical liaison at Otsuka Pharmaceutical Companies, who spoke of innovations in psychiatric pharmacy and digital health care.
"When people share about their mental health, I mean, just thinking about your coworkers," Delp said.
"If someone came into work with a broken leg, you would ask them about it.
