"California is a global leader in the fight against climate change," Ben Stapleton says.

"Our state is experiencing the increasing impacts of climate change and yet, has an enormous opportunity to be a profound part of the solution."

Stapleton is the executive director of US Green Building Council-Los Angeles, which is changing its name to USGBC California in order to better serve the entire state, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The nonprofit, which has been operating as an independent 501(c)(3) since 2002, will now focus on community engagement, workforce development, education, and advocacy.

The six regional USGBC chapters that make up California's green building movementSan Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Central Coast, Northern California, and Redwood Empireare now under the same umbrella.

USGBC President and CEO Peter Templeton says the goal is to "position California as a national and global leader in sustainable building design, construction, and operations," per a press release.

"We will strive to accelerate action against climate change on a local level and uplift our collective voice to influence policy, advocacy, and programming to better support our communities in addressing climate resilience and occupant health," Stapleton says.
