It's one of the most common skin conditions out there, afflicting an estimated 50 million people in the USand now there's a treatment in the works that could help slow the progression of rosacea, the New York Daily News reports.
Radiofrequency ablation is a fractional laser treatment that uses pulses of energy up to a million times faster than the power of a laser, and it's been shown to slow the progression of the condition, also known as facial rosacea, by up to 50%, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
It's been used to treat other conditions, but this is the first time it's been shown to slow the progression of rosacea, which is caused by the body's immune system attacking the skin's blood vessels, causing facial flushing and other symptoms, according to a press release.
There are currently three FDA-approved treatments for rosacea: a steroid that blocks the body's immune system from attacking the skin's blood vessels, a laser that clears the facial layer, and a chemical called alpha lipoic acid that's added to facial serum, according to the press release.
But there's still a lot we don't know about rosacea, the Daily News
