'Extremely Grateful': Orillia Students to Receive Grants from Slain Officer'S Memorial Fund

In October, Canadian police officer Devon Northrup was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance in Innisfil, Ont.

The 33-year-old's family set up the Devon Northrup Memorial Fund in his honor, and on Monday, the first two recipients were announced.

Georgian College received $12,000 to fund two annual student bursaries for students in the police Foundations and Counselling Psychology programs, and the Royal Victoria Hospital received $16,457 to buy equipment that will help patients who can't speak communicate their needs, the CBC reports.

"We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our donors, without whom we would not be here today to see Devon's name live on in these good works," says a rep for Georgian College.

"From an emotional and healing perspective, this is going to be life-changing for folks," says a rep for the hospital, which plans to use the money to buy speech-generating equipment for patients who can't speak.

"Before, our patients literally didn't have a voice," says the manager of donor advising with the RVH foundation.

"Now they can communicate not only with other health care providers, in terms of things for like pain management, or whatever their needs may be, but it also allows them to communicate
