Medical Lab Assistant - Emergency -36 hrs/wk, 7a-7p

Job Description


PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

The primary purpose of this position is to provide any necessary support to the emergency room physicians, providers, or nurses for the reason of expediting patient care by delivering clinical laboratory assistance, occupational health assistance, and other miscellaneous direct patient care needs.  Under the direct supervision of the leadership from the laboratory, emergency department, and Well at Work, and in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations this position will be responsible for performing phlebotomy, laboratory specimen processing, point of care testing, post-accident or reasonable suspicion occupational health evaluations, maintaining adequate supplies, and assisting with patient’s direct care needs while providing services in a friendly and organized clean environment.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Duty 1:  Practices effective communication skills, i.e. listening, phone skills, etc. and always maintains a respectful and courteous attitude. Communication reflects the organizations culture of Service Excellence. Makes suggestions in a positive, tactful manner.  Maintains clean, neat, professional appearance, i.e. wears ID badge, slip resistant shoes, and complies with department dress code, BVHS appearance and Standards of Behavior policies.

Duty 2:  Consistently obtains the proper laboratory specimens according to the medical provider’s orders.  Properly positively verifies patient’s identity by utilizing two patient identifiers before each procedure, test, or specimen labeling according to BVHS administrative patient ID policies. Understands the importance of quality specimen integrity and its direct effects on the quality of tests results and patient care.  Uses good judgment when procuring specimens from difficult patients or unusual circumstances as well as when handling unusual requests for laboratory needs.

Duty 3: Correctly prioritizes the collection and delivery of STATS, Urgent, Timed Studies, and Routine orders to the laboratory. Can maintain organization in a confusing area. Can plan the day to ensure effective completion of all duties. Prioritizes correctly to ensure the quickest response times for the most important areas of the jobs. Works at a suitable pace.  Can adjust as workload increases. Maintains organization of area despite frequent interruptions.  Follows instructions with little or no follow-up supervision.  Shows successful ability to monitor specimen collection batches, outstanding specimen pending logs, and edit specimen accessions prior to sending specimens to the testing site.  Follows all laboratory, emergency room, and occupational health and hospital safety regulations, including proper storage and disposal of specimens, testing supplies, and sharps. 

Duty 4: Properly maintains supplies and obtains phlebotomy items for blood collection for the phlebotomy cart and/or their working area.  Properly process and handle specimen requisitions, maintaining accuracy of all demographic information for registration and submission process in the EMR system(s).  Checks all corresponding specimens for accuracy and completeness of information checking and correcting of orders, investigate specimen problems, receive specimens in the EMR, evaluate the quality and appropriateness of specimens received.  Documents in computer system any deviation from standard procedure.

Duty 5:  Perform Point of Care laboratory testing, as approved by BVHS laboratory, emergency room, and occupational health leadership.  Accurately prepares working reagents, test kits, and testing supplies to ensure the highest quality of testing standards are maintained.  Accurately keeps excellent quality control documentation, instrument maintenance records, and temperature logs always.  Must have ability to recognize and report any deviations from standard operating procedures.  Must be able to analyze test result values for appropriateness and communicate any critical values within expected turnaround times.  Completes all mandatory point of care testing competency expectations as deemed required by the laboratory.

Duty 6: Accurately executes the functions of performing post-accident and reasonable suspicion evaluations of patients reporting to the department for occupational health screens.  This includes proper patient registration, specimen collection, processing, record keeping and testing. 

Duty 7:  Acts as the liaison for appropriate communication, work flow and knowledge between the laboratory, emergency services, and Well at Work occupational health.  Completes all mandatory learning and competency requirements as assigned by BVHS Administration, Laboratory Services, Emergency Services, and Well at Work.  Works within and consistent to the BVHS Mission, Vision and Values and successfully pursues completion of all personal and departmental goals.  Exhibits self-directed motivation for continuing education related to maintaining and enhancing skills for, and potentially beyond, current job title.  Regularly demonstrates thorough knowledge of current job duties. Keeps aware of changes in technology of area. Stays familiar with up-to-date equipment. Attends in-services which apply to the job and is active in departmental meetings and huddles.  Keeps abreast of posted information from memos, minutes of meetings, and department communication logs.  Shows respectful attitude when dealing with other professionals.

Duty 8: Understands the importance of professionalism and customer service excellence with the need to exemplify a positive caring attitude as a public relations representative of BVHS. Communication and actions with customers reflect BVHS scripting and Service Excellence attributes meeting customer’s needs in timely manner, proper phone skills, and listening skills. Interacts well with patients. Interacts well with physicians and other professionals both inside and outside the emergency department.  Understands patient’s confidentiality rights and adheres to all HIPPA regulations. 

Duty 9:  Completes all mandatory learning requirements for specific job, along with assigned job competency requirements and documentation. Associate also must be working within and consistent to the Mission, Vision, and Values of the association and successfully complete all personal and department goals.

Duty 10: Attendance: Is punctual and is present when scheduled. Adheres to BVHS attendance policy.  Understands they are part of a small team that must fill and cover shift assignments, position vacancies, requested time off, and unscheduled absences as scheduled and directed by management.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of clinical or anatomical laboratory functions, medical terminology or a science background
  • Knowledge of computers and accurate typing skills.
  • DOT certified collector for Urine and Alcohol collections or must obtain within 3 months of hire.
  • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills required.  Individual must be customer focused, service oriented, and able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Individual must be organized, able to prioritize, work in a fast pace environment and have excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Individual must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills required.
  • Individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on his/her assigned unit/department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient status.  Must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the area’s policies and procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree in an Allied Health field
  • EMT-Basic experience
  • CPR Certified
  • Phlebotomy experience and PBT(ASCP) registration
  • Completion of a regionally accredited phlebotomy certificate program preferred
  • Clinical Laboratory experience with specimen handling, processing, and collection processes

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent walking, lifting, bending, climbing, squatting, kneeling, twisting, sitting and standing. The associate will be required to walk, bend, and stand up to seven hours a day. The individual must be able to lift twenty to fifty pounds and reach work above the shoulders. This associate must have excellent eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity and the ability to grasp different items. The associate must be able to visualize patient veins and hear audible alarms. This position requires the associate to work at a high rate of speed.  Must be able to drive from various locations.

This position is classified “at risk” for possible occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens (HBV, HIV, etc.)
