Cuddle Buddies: Volunteer Infant Comfort Program

Job Description


PURPOSE:  To offer physical and emotional contact with infants in an effort to foster growth and development. Volunteers will provide stimulation and comfort when family is not available.
 
TIME COMMITMENT:  Volunteers serve a minimum of one three hour shift weekly, or as needed. Shifts are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, based on schedule availability.
                             
QUALIFICATIONS:  Volunteers must be compassionate with good interpersonal skills, and should be able to work independently without direct supervision. Volunteers must be dependable and punctual, as well as sensitive to cultural, language and age differences. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and a non-smoker. Volunteers must be able to interact with guests and maintain the Eskenazi Health PRIDE standards.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  While performing the duties of this service area, the volunteer is regularly required to stand, walk, push and pull. Volunteers must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and be stable on their feet.  Volunteers must be able to stay awake during cuddling sessions. 
 
TRAINING AND SUPERVISION: Onboarding and initial orientation are provided by Volunteer Services.  Additional training, specific to the duties of the Cuddle Buddies program, will be provided by a qualified staff member, or volunteer, of the Women’s and Children’s Unit.  Service in this area is coordinated to enhance the work of nursing staff, with direct supervision through the NICU Care Committee/Charge Nurse and Volunteer Services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Volunteers will rock, hold, sing to, talk to and be there to comfort babies in the Eskenazi Health Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
  • Adhere to the Confidentiality & Information Resource Agreement policy of Eskenazi Health
  • Adhere to Eskenazi Health Policies, Procedures and Standards of Service (PRIDE)
  • Be dependable and punctual
  • Work a consistent number of scheduled hours and record all hours served in Kronos
  • Notify Volunteer Services and service area charge nurse of intended or unavoidable absences
  • Upon arrival, scrub in with approved 3 minute hand wash technique and put on gown
  • Check in with the Charge Nurse and get instructions as to which infants need cuddling
  • Hands must be washed before handling infants.  Hand sanitizer must be used before entering and after exiting each patient room
  • Inform nurse of any concerns with infant behavior
  • At the conclusion of shift, notify Charge Nurse of your departure and sign out.
OTHER DUTIES:
  • Check the Laundry
  • Ask moms/dad and visitors if they need water
  • Wipe down surfaces
  • Hang/organize newly donated items
  • Package/prepare NICU materials
  • Assist NICU Family Support Coordinator with activities
  • Other duties as assigned
 
RESTRICTIONS:
  • Do not walk with infant
  • Do not leave NICU with infant
  • Must be a non-smoker
  • Fragrances, scented lotions, etc., are not permitted
  • Volunteers may not have acrylic or gel nails, or use gel nail polish
  • Unchipped regular nail polish is permitted
  • Do not permit the entry of any unauthorized staff or visitor to the area
  • Do not change diaper, or give breastfeeding advice or support
  • No food may be brought into the NICU, covered drinks are allowed in the break room
