Nonprofit Gains Control of Its It Landscape with Rsm

"We have an obligation to an industry, and that involves different data sets and priorities."

That's what Aidan Chen, data and analytics and privacy officer for Canada's affinity Association, had to say when the nonprofit decided to revamp its data strategy, modernize its IT systems, and better position itself to serve its members and the overall industry, Fast Company reports.

Chen says the groupwhich offers car insurance to low-income Canadianswas using legacy systems like Microsoft Excel and stored much of its data with a third-party provider or in Access databases.

"We really listened to FA's stakeholders and didn't force any solutions," Chen says.

That's why the team atRSM, which worked with the group for six weeks, was able to come up with a solution that was "fit to our purpose," Chen says.

The first step was to set up a data governance framework, which allowed FA to have more ownership over its data, a crucial step for the organization on its journey to modernize its data.

The second step was to implement a hybrid model, in which FA used Azure's cloud environment to host its data, as well as provide services such as supporting the organization's data in the cloud.
